A one-way bus ticket may seem like a heartless way to dispose of homeless people, but homeless advocates in Gainesville are eager to try it.
The city and the St. Francis House shelter launched the Homeward Bound program yesterday in expectations of bringing back together homeless people with their families or friends. Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan said, “It's trying to reconnect people to the places and people that have the income to obtain them back on their feet".
The program financed with $10,000 of city money. The city's block funding manager says St. Francis House caseworkers will facilitate the homeless inhabitants who would like to go back to family or friends elsewhere in Florida or the country. One time someone has agreed to help the homeless inhabitant, the caseworker will buy a bus ticket, take the member to the place and make sure to get on the bus.
